 About the Artist
Paula at her machine

My gardens provide a never-ending source of inspiration and solace. My pieces try to capture a blossom's essence and the energy and the awe I feel when experiencing their beauty. Their images express my thoughts on life and I find they are a perfect metaphor for life's processes of birth, aging and death.

Recently, I began a series of sonograms, x-rays, MRIs, and other body imaging. I had noticed a friend's MRI and found it such a beautiful, powerful image, that it needed to be expressed. In the same way that florals inspire, the body imaging also provides a powerful statement of what we experience; they become a window into our lives, referencing our pain and joy.

All of my work incorporates hand-dyed silks, often over-dyed many times to capture a fuller, richer depth of color. A fusible interfacing is applied and cotton/polyester batting attached. The florals are machine appliquéd; the body images are heavily embroidered and all are heavily machine quilted using monofilament thread.

I hope you can experience what I see and feel in these images and join me in appreciation of their beauty and power.
